Electric Balance Bike vs PW50 – Which Is Better To Start On?

Trying to decide between a Yamaha PW50 and an electric alternative? For many young riders, especially around ages 2–6, a small electric bike can be a better first step than jumping straight onto a petrol PW50.

A PW50 is a proper petrol-powered kids motorcycle. Smaller electric bikes such as Revvi, Amped, STACYC and smaller RFN Warrior models are usually quieter, easier to manage and better for building confidence before moving onto larger bikes.

Quick Answer

Choose an electric balance bike if your child is very young, new to riding, or still learning balance and throttle control.

Choose a smaller RFN Warrior if your child wants something closer to a mini dirt bike feel, but you still want electric simplicity.

Choose a PW50 if your child is already confident and you specifically want a petrol bike experience.

For most young riders, electric is usually the easier and less intimidating first step.

My Take as a British MX Rider

The PW50 is iconic, but it is not always the best first step for every child.

For young riders, confidence and control matter more than petrol noise or tradition. A small electric bike lets them learn the basics with less intimidation and less maintenance.

If your child is still learning, I would normally start electric first, then move up once they are confident.

Why Start on an Electric Bike?

Lightweight

Small electric balance bikes are easier for young riders to handle and control.

Quiet

Electric bikes are less intimidating than petrol bikes for beginners.

Simple

No petrol, no hot engine and less maintenance to worry about.

Confidence Building

Riders learn balance, braking and throttle control naturally.

Where RFN Warrior Fits In

A More MX-Style Electric Option

The smaller RFN Warrior models are a good option for families who want something closer to a mini dirt bike than a standard electric balance bike.

Compared with Revvi, Amped or STACYC balance bikes, the RFN Warrior range gives more of a seated motorcycle-style feel while still keeping the benefits of electric power.

For some riders moving away from the idea of a petrol PW50, a smaller RFN Warrior can be a very natural electric alternative.

Our Verdict

For most young beginners, especially riders aged around 2–6, a small electric balance bike is usually the better starting point than a PW50.

Revvi, Amped and STACYC are excellent for learning balance and throttle control. Smaller RFN Warrior models are worth considering if you want more of a mini dirt bike feel.

The PW50 still has its place for confident young riders who are ready for petrol, but it is not always the easiest first step.

For a first bike, I would usually start electric first, then step up as the rider gains confidence.
